Grammy-nominated rapper 21 Savage, real name Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was taken into federal immigration custody early Sunday, February 3rd, 2019.

The rapper was arrested by ICE in a targeted operation in Atlanta that involved both local and federal law enforcement officers. 21 Savage is a British citizen who not only overstayed his visa, but also has a felony conviction. He entered the United States legally in 2005, but his visa expired in 2006. He has been in the country illegally since then, and was convicted on felony drug charges in October of 2014.

He has been placed in deportation proceedings in federal immigration court, but his attorney said, “We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings.”
