Tracy Morgan Poked Fun at Horrific Truck Accident at SAG Awards

Top Truck Accident Lawyer Charlottesville, VAIn 2014, Tracy Morgan was involved in a car accident that almost took his life and killed his friend. Morgan was riding a limousine bus at the time of his accident when it was struck by a Walmart truck on the New Jersey Turnpike. Morgan, luckily, survived the crash. His friend, comedian James McNair, was killed in the accident.

The driver of the truck, Kevin Roper, was charged with vehicular homicide and assault by auto. He was going 65 miles per hour when his truck crashed into Morgan’s limousine.

In May of 2015, the comedian settled his lawsuit against the superstore, and though the details of the settlement are confidential, it is assumed that Morgan walked away with quite a bit of money. He said in a statement, “Walmart did right by me and my family, and for my associates and their families. I am grateful that the case was resolved amicably.”

For their part, Walmart made a statement saying, “While we know there is nothing that can change what happened, Walmart has been committed to doing what’s right to help ensure the well-being of those who were impacted by the accident.”

The superstore also settled wrongful death claims with the children of James McNair for $10 million and it is assumed that, because of the long term effects of the crash on Morgan and the ways in which it has affected his earning power, the comedian received much more than that.

In fact, Morgan even recently joked that he is set for life following the incident. The 50-year-old comedian showed up at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 27th, 2019 to present the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series and he unexpectedly poked fun at the horrific accident.

“I gotta say, it’s an honor to be presenting this award tonight. It’s a very prestigious award and can be life-changing, and trust me when I say, as a former winner, if you win this award tonight, and get hit by a Walmart truck, and survive with all your arms and legs, you gonna be set for life,” he joked. Then he added, “You can trust that.”

For some time it looked like it was unlikely that Morgan would ever return to comedy, but after rehabilitation and time, the comedian as stepped back into the spotlight. In 2017, Morgan told People magazine: “I got hit by a truck, it was a great story. So that’s what happened. I had a story to tell.”
