Fortnite is a game that is sweeping the Internet. It has reportedly earned $1 billion alone in 2018 and it’s not about to slow down anytime soon. In the game, players can use real-world dance moves on their avatar in the game.

This is actually a problem because people are starting to sue Epic Games, the developer, for using their dance moves without consulting or compensating them. For example, the rapper 2 Milly decided to sue the developer for the use of his “Milly Rock” dance, saying that the game essentially copies the dance step-by-step and is now profiting off of it. They are also being sued for using the likeness of Lenwood “Skip” Hamilton, who looks just like the “Cole Train” character from Gears of War.

Then, there was Donald Faison, an actor best known for his role in Scrubs, who accused the developer of copying another dance (one he made up while on Scrubs). Faison is not suing Epic yet, but they’re definitely not being quiet about it. Alfonso Ribeiro, best known for playing Carlton on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is also filing a lawsuit after the game stole his signature dance. There’s also Backpack Kid, who invented The Floss, who is now suing the developer as well.

The chances that any of these people registered a copyright for these dances is low, so things could work in Epic’s favor. These won’t be the last lawsuits you hear of I’m sure! It’s a dance-off until one side or the other makes a move.
