Wrongful Death Suit Filed Against Watts

Christopher Watts was sentenced to 3 consecutive life sentences without parole for the murder of his pregnant wife, Shanann and their two young children.  Watts, 33, pleaded guilty to the crimes in a deal that allowed him to avoid the death penalty.

Shanann’s family is suing Watts for wrongful death, among another things, not because Watts is a wealthy man or will likely become one but rather to prevent him from  profiting off the death of Shanann and her children.

This means that if he is found liable in a civil court for the wrongful death of his wife and children (which is quite likely given that the criminal conviction will come in as evidence in the civil case and that the burden of proof in a civil case is much lower than that in a criminal case and) and Watts should ever write a book about the murders or his life or profit in any way from the story whatever money is earned will go to Shanann’s family to satisfy the judgment awarded in the civil case.

A successful wrongful death suit would also prevent Watts from profiting from the sale of the family home, help cover funeral expenses, and compensate the family for the loss of Shanann’s income and for the family’s emotional distress.

This is not dissimilar to the Goldman family’s wrongful death case against OJ. There, as we all know, in the criminal matter OJ was acquitted of the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown but at the civil trial he was found liable for their deaths. The jury there returned a $33.5 million verdict against OJ. When OJ was paroled in 2017, satisfying the civil judgment once again became a topic of great discussion.

It’s easy to fault Kim Kardashian but have to give credit where credit is due: the reality and social media star paid the legal fees of two jailed women seeking justice and because of her efforts and influence one has been released after 22 years behind bars.
